CO2 System Cylinder Hydro Static Test Service Details:
Service Frequency: The standard interval for
hydrostatic testing of high-pressure CO2 cylinders is 10 years.
However, regulations have become more stringent. The IMO has revised its
guidelines (MSC.1/Circ.1318/Rev.1) to require a more comprehensive testing
regime:
-At the 10-year inspection, at least 10% of
the total cylinders must be subjected to an internal inspection and hydrostatic
test.
-If any cylinder fails, a total of 50% must be tested. If
more cylinders fail, all cylinders must be tested.
-At the 20-year anniversary and every 10 years
thereafter, all cylinders must be subjected to a
hydrostatic test.
Service Provider: The service must be performed
by a licensed and certified agency or a manufacturer-approved service center.
These facilities have the specialized equipment and trained personnel to carry
out the tests safely and in compliance with international standards.
Service Details: A complete service goes beyond
just the hydrostatic test. It also includes:
Weighing/Level Check: All cylinders must be
weighed or checked with a liquid level indicator to ensure they contain at
least 90% of their nominal charge. Cylinders below this level must be refilled.
Valve and Hose Inspection: The cylinder valve is a critical component and is inspected for wear, and the flexible hoses connecting the cylinder to the manifold are often replaced every 10 years as per manufacturer recommendation
Documentation: A detailed service report and a hydrostatic test certificate are issued for each cylinder that passes the test. These documents are vital for audits and surveys. The cylinder is also stamped with the test date and the service provider's unique mark.
